What is the DUMUN Summer Academy?

The DUMUN Summer Academy is a fun, interactive summer program that introduces students to Model United Nations (Model UN), one of the world's most popular academic activities for developing leadership, public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.

In Model UN, students take on the role of diplomats representing different countries and work together to solve real-world global issues. Participants learn how to research, debate ideas respectfully, build consensus, and present solutions just like delegates do at international conferences.

Our academy is specifically designed for students who are new to Model UN and want a welcoming environment to learn, grow, and gain confidence.

Who can attend?

The program is open to middle and high school students ages 11-17.

No prior Model UN experience is required. Whether your student has never spoken in front of a group before or is already interested in leadership and international affairs, our Summer Academy is designed to meet them at their current level.

Students will receive guidance from experienced Model UN mentors and will have opportunities to ask questions, practice skills, and receive personalized feedback throughout the week.

When does the Summer Academy take place?

July 20-24 (Monday-Friday)

Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM each day

The Academy runs for five consecutive mornings, allowing students to learn new skills, practice them immediately, and gradually build toward a full Model UN simulation by the end of the week.

The library provides a comfortable, professional learning environment where students can collaborate, participate in discussions, and engage in Model UN activities.

What will students learn?

Throughout the week, students will learn the fundamentals of Model UN and develop valuable skills that can be applied both inside and outside the classroom.

Topics include:

• Understanding how Model UN conferences work

• Learning parliamentary procedure and committee rules

• Researching countries and global issues

• Public speaking and presentation techniques

• Writing resolutions and policy proposals

• Negotiation and teamwork strategies

• Leadership and consensus-building

• Effective debate and persuasive communication

• Preparing for future Model UN conferences

By the end of the week, students will have participated in a realistic simulation and will understand how to confidently represent a country in a committee setting.

Why should my student participate?

What is the daily schedule?

Day 1: Introduction to Model UN

Students will learn what Model UN is, how conferences work, and how to prepare effectively for committee sessions.

Day 2: Resolution Writing & Public Speaking

Students will learn how to write proposals that address global issues and deliver speeches that are clear, persuasive, and memorable.

Day 3: Leadership & Strategy

Students will explore advanced skills such as coalition-building, leading discussions, and effective negotiation techniques commonly used by successful delegates.

Day 4: Committee Simulation (Part 1)

Students will participate in a realistic committee simulation and receive individualized coaching and feedback from instructors.

Day 5: Committee Simulation (Part 2)

Students will continue the simulation, apply everything they have learned throughout the week, and receive additional personalized feedback and guidance.

Will students receive individual feedback?

Yes.

One of the unique aspects of the Summer Academy is the opportunity for students to receive individualized coaching and feedback throughout the week, particularly during the simulation sessions.

Instructors will help students improve their public speaking, research, negotiation, and leadership skills while offering practical suggestions for future growth.

Is lunch provided?

Since the Academy concludes at 12:00 PM each day, lunch will not be provided.

However, snacks will be available throughout the week. Students are also welcome to bring their own snacks if they have particular dietary preferences or needs.

What if my student cannot attend all five days?

We understand that summer schedules can be busy.

If a student needs to miss one or more sessions, we encourage families to notify us in advance. We will provide learning materials, resources, and content from the missed sessions whenever possible so that students can stay engaged and continue progressing with the program.

Do you offer scholarships or financial assistance?

Yes.

We believe every student should have access to educational opportunities regardless of financial circumstances. To help make the Summer Academy accessible, we offer a limited number of need-based scholarships.

Is enrollment limited?

Yes.

To ensure every participant receives personalized attention, coaching, and meaningful opportunities to participate, enrollment is limited to 20 students.

Because space is limited, we strongly encourage families to register early to reserve their spot.

What is your refund policy?

Refund requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Factors that may be considered include:

• When the request is made

• Number of registrations purchased

• Program capacity and waitlist considerations

• Other special circumstances

Because enrollment is limited and spots are reserved in advance, most refund requests may not be approved. Families with extenuating circumstances should contact dumunsg@gmail.com to discuss their situation.

My student has never done Model UN before. Will they feel behind?

Not at all.

In fact, the Summer Academy was specifically created for students who are new to Model UN. We begin with the fundamentals and gradually build knowledge and confidence throughout the week.

Our goal is to create an encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new skills, and learning at their own pace.
